'Tis the Season

Image
Imagine this. Christmas season; meaning hot cocoa, grandma’s homemade pumpkin cookies (and of course the sugar cookies we bake for Santa) , and the infamous Christmas dinner. This is the time of year that truly takes away the tortures of picky eating. Christmas desserts are something that no picky eater can ever complain about. Why? Because there is simply just too many options.  My favorite part is going to Grandma’s house to make the cookies we lay out for Santa. This is a Christmas tradition. My brothers and I always decorate the cookies that Grandma bakes so they’re especially unique for Santa’s arrival. We make homemade frosting and get right at it. My brothers, of course, decorating every cookie they can get their hands on as I, on the other hand, am shoveling as much frosting in my mouth as possible (the true blessing of making Christmas cookies) . On top of these cookies for Santa, one cannot forget about Rudolph and the other reindeer, so we also leave

Thanksgiving Edition

Thanksgiving is usually stressful enough… dealing with crazy families, cooking a feast, and making an attempt to go black Friday shopping with a 6 year old.. Seems like this would cause enough anxiety, but nope… thinking about the fact that a holiday is solely based around a feast makes a picky eater cringe. It isn’t even Thanksgiving yet and I have already been getting the food jokes. The best one I think I have gotten so far is “what, are you going to use a tray so your foods don’t touch?” This is funny because in my life it’s not a joke. A few years ago, my grandpa did the honor of purchasing a divided plate for me to use at Thanksgiving. Comes with several sections, one for turkey, one for potatoes, one for cranberry sauce, and one especially dedicated to my veggies. This plate has carried on since making even a picky eater enjoy the holiday. With the stress of thanksgiving, there are perks to being the only picky eater in the family. Since everyone knows how st

10 Things NOT to Say to a Picky Eater

Image
Don’t mind me being a Negative Nancy over here but there are some things that seem to amaze me that people ask. Here is another adventure from the life of a picky eater. These are just some of the silly questions I get as told by New Girl. 1. "You’re just being difficult" Correction, I am not being difficult as you don’t see me trying to stuff things in your face that you aren’t a fan of. It’s no different than one not liking the way clothing items look or going to certain places. It just so happens I like certain food, end of story. 2. "How can you eat *insert food here* if you don’t like your food touching?" This is the most frequent question I receive. When I say I don’t like my food touching, I mean I don’t want my potatoes touching my steak or my ranch touching my wing sauce. So when you ask STUPID questions like how do you eat a cheeseburger because its touching, it makes me want to slap you. 3. "It all goes to

Jelly Soup

I know what you’re thinking… Jelly Soup? Uh what? It’s just a Kerstyn-Angelica thing… you wouldn’t understand. Picky eating is a struggle in itself, but it is also harder when you live with people and you’re broke college students .This experience has really made me gain appreciation for how amazing the people in my life are and how much of a support system that I really have. When I sit and think of meals to make, I never really understand how my eating affects anyone else. That is until I lived with the same person for 3 years. Within that time, we got into these Pinterest phase because, you know, we are Betty Crocker or something and we got tired of eating the same few meals every week. Angelica tends to find a new recipes on Pinterest that she is dying to make. From this, I have really come a long way from freshman year. I went from eating plain pasta noodles with only butter to now eating pasta sauces such as parmesan garlic and even Alfredo (when I am feeling ris

The Pizza Spreadsheet

Image
Being a picky eater was a hot topic during my summer internship at Caterpillar this past summer. My group was very interactive and we went out for weekly lunches as a group for “team bonding.” Side note: I promise you, you will never regret this in the workplace… always have team bonding over food! So, with this being said, here is a little background: it was always difficult to go out to eat because like, I’m me, and my food groups consist of salad, nuggets, and pizza. One day, my boss made a comment about what pizza places I like. The basic girl I am responds with “Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, etc.” because like he won’t know what La Roma’s is (his loss) . The judgment I got from this is where it all started… a pizza spreadsheet was born and everyone made recommendations on pizza places in the area. We then took a team vote and ranked the pizza places as such. Not only did we try a new pizza place every week, we ranked them based on taste and quality food. T

You Don't Mess with the Cobbler

One of the worst experiences a picky eater can have, other than being asked to go to dinner at a restaurant, is getting invited over to someone’s house to have dinner. Gosh, all these food invites need to STAHP. It’s one thing to be picky and to be very particular of what to order at a restaurant, but it is a completely different story when someone is cooking you a meal. It can be really insulting when one doesn’t eat the meal given and I feel like I always run into this issue. There have been several circumstances in my lifetime that I have had to choke down some food somewhere without literally being ill. Sometimes it can be a good experience to try new things, but 9 times out of 10 I would rather die.   I remember this one time that I went to a friend’s house and they invited me to stay for dinner. Give or take my friends all know about my picky eating habits and obviously just enjoy watching me suffer (they think it’s hilarious). The meal sounded pretty simple

Tips 'N Tricks

Image
As a picky eater, choosing what types of food to eat and how to eat them is already hard enough. But, with this being my fifteenth year at it, I have come down to a few tricks that help going to restaurants easier and simply just tricks to "spice" up your life. When I say spice up, I mean spice up in a picky eater fashion.  Buffalo Wild Wings Bdubs is my absolute favorite place to go because, like, chicken wings. Wings are the one food I can't really be picky about because I just love them so much. well, they have to be boneless but it's whatever. I am a very avid Buffalo Wild Wing customer, so like first tip, download the app. You'll thank me later. Then lastly, order your wings bare with the sauce on the side. I know this sounds crazy but then, if you have leftovers, your wings won't be soggy and you can also control exactly how much sauce is on your wings. This helps when they put too much or not enough on the wings if they were ordered regularly
